School-aged kids will learn how to apply V-shaped composition to their artwork in this fun project. We’ve included a free printable to make this lesson easy for home or classroom use.
Composition
“Composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art.”
– Kiddle –
In today’s project, kids will create art which begins with a simple V-shaped line. This guideline will create the framework for the V composition, easily demonstrating one of the many composition styles used by artists throughout the years.

Directions to Make Art Using V Composition
Step 1
Begin by choosing a gnome from the printable to use in project. Color and cut out.
Step 2
On the blank piece of cardstock, use a pencil to draw a large V shaped line. The tops of the V should extend to the top edge of the page. This V shape will be a quick guideline for the rest of our drawing.
Step 3
Next, place gnome onto cardstock with V and complete sketch. The scenery should only be drawn surrounding the outside of the V. We want the center of the V to remain mostly blank to reinforce the V composition.
Step 4
Use a permanent marker to trace final sketch. Erase unwanted pencil lines.
Step 5
Then, add color to your drawing with crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
Step 6
Finally, glue gnome onto drawing and add any finishing touches.

I love how easy these cute little gnome creations are to make! Since these projects are made on paper, they can easily be framed, clipped, or displayed in your preferred style.
