Toyota Taisor: Maruti Fronx-Based Compact SUV’s Launch Date Revealed

Toyota is gearing up to debut its much-anticipated compact SUV, the Urban Cruiser Taisor, on April 3. This new model, based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, will mark Toyota’s re-entry into the sub-4m SUV segment in India. Toyota earlier used to sell the Etios Liva, which was discontinued in 2020, and the Vitara Brezza-based Urban Cruiser, discontinued in 2022, in the sub-4m segment. The Taisor will be launched on 3rd April, 2024.

When launched, the SUV will be the smallest car in Toyota India’s lineup. The Urban Cruiser Taisor has been long-awaited since Toyota trademarked the nameplate “Urban Cruiser Taisor” back in August 2023. Like previous shared models between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, the Taisor is likely to come with cosmetic changes only; the rest will remain the same.

The exterior updates on the rebadged Fronx are expected to be similar to those seen in models such as the Baleno-Glanza pair. We can expect changes such as a redesigned bumper, updated headlamps with a new LED daytime running lamp, refreshed alloy wheels, and revised taillamps. However, there won’t be any changes to the overall body design or engine; the changes are limited to plastic parts only.

Talking about the interiors, the dashboard layout will remain the same as the Fronx, but we can expect new color schemes and trim materials. The seats are likely to receive new upholstery, and Toyota may offer the Taisor in fewer trims compared to its Maruti counterpart. Additionally, Toyota plans to provide better standard warranty coverage to differentiate its version further.

Taisor will come with features similar to the Fronx. This includes steering-mounted controls, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a 9-inch infotainment system, and much more.
In terms of powertrain options, the Taisor is expected to inherit the 1.2-liter gasoline engine from the Fronx, given its popularity among buyers.

This particular engine produces 90 hp and 113 Nm of torque in Fronx. There is no official confirmation on whether the 1.0 turbo gasoline engine will be offered in the Taisor. If included, it would be the first turbo-petrol motor in Toyota’s predominantly hybrid and diesel lineup.

Moreover, the CNG powertrain option available for the Fronx is likely to carry over to the Taisor as well. Transmission options are expected to be the same as Fronx, offering buyers a choice between a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed automatic manual transmission (AMT).

The Urban Cruiser Taisor will compete in the sub-4m SUV segment against rivals like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV300. Similar to other cars in the Maruti Suzuki-Toyota partnership, the Urban Cruiser Taisor will be available at a slightly premium price than the Fronx.

The Taisor will be the most affordable compact SUV/crossover in Toyota’s Indian line-up, replacing the Urban Cruiser, which was based on the previous generation Maruti Brezza compact SUV.
