1. TAPIR is an animal that starts with T

They may look odd at first, but tapirs have adaptations that have helped them survive on Earth for a very long time. They are primitive animals that have remained unchanged for millions of years. Present-day tapirs, depending on species, can be found in Mexico, Central America, South America, and Asia. People often think a tapir is a kind of pig or anteater, but it is actually most closely related to horses and rhinos. Its nose and upper lip are combined into a flexible snout that the animal uses to reach and pull food into its mouth. A tapir is both a browser and a grazer! It uses its snout to pluck leaves from tree branches or to feel around in the underbrush for fallen fruit to eat. Tapirs are nocturnal animals that like to spend a lot of time in the water. They can stay under the water for several minutes. In fact, when frightened, tapirs hide in the water and breathe with their snout poked above the surface like a snorkel!

2. TASMANIAN DEVIL is an animal that starts with T

Found only in Tasmania (off Australia), their name makes Tasmanian devils sound scary, but they are actually quite shy. The name “devil” may come from the sounds they make. They make eerie growls while searching for food at night. And when a group of them feeds together, they screech and scream. Tasmanian devils are marsupials, like kangaroos and koalas. The babies, or joeys, are carried in their mother’s pouch after being born. When they grow too big for the pouch, they ride on their mother’s back. Tasmanian devils eat meat, not plants. In fact they are the largest marsupial carnivore in the world! These interesting animals may make a loud fuss, but would prefer having food that is already dead, instead of having to hunt.

3. TIGER is an animal that starts with T

Tigers are really hard to find. That’s because their unique orange, black, and white stripe pattern helps them blend into the forests and grassy areas where they live and hunt. Tigers are carnivores. They are quiet, patient hunters with large powerful paws and teeth to help them catch and eat their prey. Some of their favorite meals include pigs, deer, rhinoceroses, and even small elephants. Tigers hunt for their food, but they are also hunted by humans for their valuable fur and body parts. Because of this, tiger researches think there may only be 3,500 tigers left in the world. This makes them an endangered species.

4. TOUCAN is an animal that starts with T

Toucan? They can! Toucans are important for rain forest health and diversity in their habitats in Central and South America. These birds eat seeds, which helps replant the plants. The toucan’s bill is also a big deal. Some say that the large and brightly colored bill is used to attract potential mates. Others suggest it is useful in scaring away predators or animals that might compete with the toucan for food. Toucans are known to reach deep into tree cavities to grab eggs from other birds or to dig deeply into their own nesting cavities to clear them out, and pairs have been seen tossing fruit to one another in a courtship ritual. No matter what purpose you decide on, the toucan’s bill is a very useful tool! Toucans spend their lives high in the rain forest canopy—seldom making trips to the forest floor. Like a woodpecker, they nest in hollowed-out tree cavities.

5. TAKIN is an animal that starts with T

These big herbivores have special adaptations that help them survive in their habitat. A takin has split hooves that give it good footing on steep, rocky hillsides. Thick, shaggy fur helps it stay warm in the winter, and so does that super-sized snout! The big nose warms up the cold air as the takin takes a breath. Each spring, takins gather in large herds and migrate up the mountains to find fresh food. When the food runs out and the weather grows cold, they move back down to the valleys. As they travel back and forth, they use the same paths over and over again, so the route is well marked. Like cows and sheep, takins have 4 stomachs. Takins have been known to push over small trees to reach the leaves easier!
